Rules for Using My Art

Snape Fanfiction - What is Left to Say...?

So I have a question for all my Snape loving watchers: In your personal opinion is there anything left to say in Snape fanfic that hasn't already been said a million times?  I find it very hard to write fanfic right now because I feel like I have said absolutely everything I would ever want to say about the character.  I still adore the character for all his gorgeous complexity, but I feel like the outstanding issues that motivated me to write fanfiction in the first place have already all been answered by what I have written up to this point.

So, how about you?  What is it that motivates you to write (or read) Snape fanfic or create Snape art?  What wrongs do you still feel the drive to make right?  What passions for the character inspire you the most?

Though it's already been done to death, I still find the unfulfilled romance between Severus and Lily and the way he just can't get over her death the most fascinating aspect about him. I also find it interesting to see him come to terms with his feelings towards Harry, which makes Severus-as-Harry's-mentor/father,... fanfics so good to read (if they are well-written and thought through). And, believe it or not, I've even read some good Snarry fics.
So, looking at what I've written here, I guess what still fascinates me about Snape in fanart is him dealing with emotions. Maybe because he seems to be such an emotionless git in the books.

Yeah, I think that some of my favorite fanfics, and ones that were the most well written were Snarry's. There are some damn good writers in that fandom!

Yes, there are!
And I guess that Snarry is often of such high quality because these people (authors who really put that absurd a notion into words, I mean) have to do some really tough convincing to make the audience see their point of view and because of that they have to think of some pretty water-proof arguments to bolster the blooming relationship. (Because, let's face it, an "established relationship"-story is not nearly as interesting.) I know what I'm talking about because that's what I have trouble doing with House/Wilson.

I am a reader and I love reading good Snape fiction regardless of the pairing ( Lily and Snape are my favorite). I also like friendship stories, au fiction and even a orginal character if it is well written. I have found that good writers can take an idea that has been used over and over again and put an orginal twist to the story. Yes, you have to weed through many stories that are not written well. When you find that one story that you can connect with, the weeding has been well worth the trouble.
I do hope that you can find the motivation to finish one of my favorite fan fictions which of course is The Alchemist.

Hi!

You may not remember me; I go by Penelope Muir now but I think I was Neon Potter the last time we spoke, perhaps two years ago now. I had no idea you were still around but if you're done with the Severus and Lily pairing then that's probably why. It's ashame that you're no longer writing them, as I still remember sitting at my computer until 3am in the morning, even when I had 9am lectures at university to get to, not going to bed until I was certain there wasn't going to be another chapter of the Alchemist posted. Your writing for that story was incredible and, like Severus and Lily are OTP to me, your story was pretty much my bible for them when I was reading fics about them. Unfortunately, like Polkadotpeony said, good quality stories with that pairing are very difficult to come by now.

As a reader of Severus, I am very fussy, I admit it. I can't stomach any more Severus angst at the moment after writing Honour Among Death Eaters - it depresses me too much. And I can't read him with Hermione because, like you said, he is a man and she is a girl; and, while there are some good quality stories with Severus being giving a chance to 'do over' everything with Lily, the idea of him going back, with the mind of a man, and being with 16, 17, even 18 year old Lily also doesn't sit too comfortably with me. So, for good Severus portrayal with mentions of her, I find myself forgoing their relationship and turning instead to AU Severus and Harry mentor fics. I see you mentioned Severus/Narcissa as a Post War coupling which would be interesting to read.

As a writer, I second Polkadotpeony and Citrenestone's suggestions; Severus needs to be put in different circumstances for us to avoid beating the same points home. Otherwise, it feels like you’re always writing the same thing; beating a dead horse. When I'm writing Severus now, he's not restricted by canon events and I find it a lot more motivating trying to imagine how he could of been and how he would act in new situations, had his life not been suppressed due to the guilt and remorse he felt over what happened to Lily. Saying that, I understand why the question of ‘where does it go from here’ is coming up. There are so many stories out there with the same plot line, the most recognisable being Lily and Severus at Hogwarts, staying friends and falling in love, etc. Although there are some good quality works that tell that story, it’s difficult to feel engaged when you’ve read the same thing over and over again. We need more stories like the Alchemist that challenge him and open up new avenues for exploration.

From my own, very egoistic point of view, I'd love to see you finishing your SS/HG WIPs, Solace and A Room of One's Own. I know SS/HG always came second for you, but I can safely say that you gave me new things to consider about them as a couple, and surely you influenced my own vision about them. The way they interact when Snape has (apparently) lost his magic (in Solace) and their quarrel over Hermione's abortion (in ARoOO) are stored in my own imagery about this couple. Your writing of a broken Hermione always rang true to me, and your style... well.

I don't use to read SS/LE, so I can't speak about it. In general, I'd say that there's a lot that can be explored in Snape's days with the DE (not necessarily from an uber!angsty point of view), as well as about his first decade of teaching, and then there are the hundreds possible scenario of Snape survived. This last one is, for obvious reason, the natural habitat of SS/HG, and there are a lot of possibilities yet.

I'd say that, at least in SS/HG, what appeals me more nowdays is style - not so much what happens, but how it is told. I have found little pearls of prose in SS/HG short stories, recently, and that's what makes them worth reading, IMHO.

Yes, there are some pretty good writers in the SS/HG fandom, that's for sure.

What I desire most in fanfiction is well first of all quality. Which honestly I don't find much of it at all in the Snape/Lily world. I haven't been looking recently but I hate wading through garbage trying to find something worthy. Second I am almost always drawn to either past AU Snape or future AU Snape. I actually have two very awesome stories in my head, I'm great at coming up with ideas but I am not confident enough in my writing skills to ever execute them. I know what I want in a Snape/Lily story but I rarely find it out on the net. I feel like people limit themselves with Snape. They do tend to beat the same issues over and over again, they rarely have the originality to place him in different circumstances and just see what he does. That's what I do in my mind and it's tons of fun. That's what I love about the Alchemist because it's like well lets see what Severus would do if Lily had lived that night.
I am actually a fan of Snape/OFC. I would love to see you write some stuff like that. I read a great fic once with Snape/OFC and I loved it. While I love Snape/Lily it would make sense for him to have another relationship, to move on and deal with the ramification emotionally of trying to forget Lily and try to trust and love again. I actually like learning about a new character, I prefer it to Snape/other Harry Potter character mentioned in the books. The problem with pairing Snape with an already established Harry Potter character is that their is a reason I believe why he was never mentioned as having an interest or relationship with someone mentioned in the books and it's because their personalities just don't set well with his and since you are bound by the way the character has been created, like Hermione you can't really stray from those parameters. Not quite sure why people don't care for Snape/OFC but I do!

I love Snape OFC too, as long as they aren't Mary Sues. I think there is more believability there than pairing him with most canon characters (though I still have a soft spot for Snape/Narcissa in certain contexts). In fact, if someone had to ask me what my #1 personal fave is out of everything I have written, I would say "Comfort": [link] . I love Gwen, and I still think that the sequel to it, that I had started had some potential. Whenever I consider getting seriously reinvested in one of my stories, that always comes up second, right after "The Alchemist".
